Overview

Developed in 1919 as a moisturizer for the rough, dry hands of Iowa farmers working in the cornfields, Corn Huskers Lotion is closer to a gel than a creamy lotion. The main ingredient after water is glycerin, which helps seal in moisture. The use of Corn Huskers Lotion is not limited to soothing dry hands. Oil-free and non-greasy, the product is a versatile remedy.

Foot Moisturizer

Treat dry, cracked feet to a soothing home pedicure. Soak them in warm, soapy water for at least 10 minutes. Use a pumice stone to smooth away dead skin and calluses and then soak them for another five minutes or so. Pat your feet dry and slather on the Corn Huskers Lotion. It goes on more like a gel than a lotion, and disappears into the skin almost immediately, leaving your feet silky smooth.

Sunburn Remedy

Soothe and hydrate sunburned skin. Corn Huskers Lotion contains glycerin, which is an excellent moisturizer. According to Kaila Westerman at Pioneer Thinking, “glycerin is also highly 'hygroscopic,' which means that it absorbs water from the air.” Scientists are not certain whether this is what makes it such a good moisturizer or not, but Corn Huskers Lotion does cool sunburned skin and may help it to heal without blistering.

Frizz Tamer

Tame wild hair by applying a quarter-sized dollop of Corn Huskers Lotion to your palm and smoothing it through damp hair. Many of the ingredients in Corn Huskers Lotion -- like methylparaben and triethanolamine -- also appear in hair products. Methylparaben has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties and triethanolamine helps balance pH.

Personal Lubricant

While the manufacturers of Corn Huskers Lotion do not tout this as one of its uses, authors Joe Graedon, MS, and Tracy Graedon, Ph.D. at The People’s Pharmacy recommend the use of Corn Huskers Lotion as a personal lubricant, both on their website and in their book, "The Best Choices from the People’s Pharmacy."
