There are many reasons why you may want to shave your pubic area. If you are a swimmer or biker, you may shave all the hair off of your body in order to get the fastest time possible. You may want to spice things up in the bedroom. Whatever the reason, shaving your pubic area should be done with care. If you don't take your time, you could end up with red bumps on the pubic area, which is a symptom of ingrown hair.
Step 1
Take a warm shower or bath before you begin. This will open up all of the pores on your body and begin the process of softening the hair.
Step 2
Apply a washcloth doused with warm to hot water to the pubic area in order to further soften the skin and hair. If the hair is soft, it will come off easier and cleaner. An ingrown hair occurs when the hair is cut too close and begins to regrow under the skin, causing it to get infected.
Step 3
Cover the hair with a layer of shaving cream or gel. The cream will give the razor a smooth surface to glide over, minimizing damage to the skin.
Step 4
Shave the hair with the razor. Go in long smooth strokes, moving in the direction of hair growth. Give each section two passes with the razor in order to make sure the area is smooth. Wash the hair from the razor periodically in order to maintain a sharp edge.
Step 5
Rinse the pubic area to remove any excess cream and hair. Pat the area dry with a towel.
Tips and Warnings
- Shaving with the grain of the hair keeps the hair growing in the same direction. When it grows back, its easier for the hair to get back out if the skin. If you shave against the grain, you run the risk of the hair growing in the wrong direction, getting stuck under the skin and causing a bump.
- Don't shave when the hair is first coming back in order to maintain the "smoothness." This can cause bumps to appear in the whole area because the skin and hair are irritated. Allow the hair to grow back a bit before re-shaving.
