Methadone, an opiate analgesic, reduces withdrawal symptoms from heroin and other narcotics, but does not cause euphoria, or a "high." Drugs.com notes that methadone is primarily used in maintenance and detoxification programs for people addicted to narcotics; sometimes, doctors prescribe it to alleviate severe pain. Take methadone exactly as prescribed. Combining it with alcohol, tranquilizers, sedatives or other narcotics can be life-threatening. Don't stop taking methadone abruptly; like all narcotics, it is physically addictive. If you experience hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the lips or face, seek emergency treatment for an allergic reaction to this medication.

Serious Side Effects

Methadone can cause serious side effects. MedlinePlus says you should call your doctor if you have slow, shallow breathing where your lungs don't seem to be expanding properly, giving you the feeling you can't get enough air. Hallucinations, confusion, dizziness, light-headedness and fainting are also serious side effects that require medical attention. Also call a doctor immediately if you have chest pain, or if your heart feels as if it pounding very fast or hard. MedlinePlus notes that the serious side effects of methadone are usually more likely to happen the first few days you take the drug, while your doctor is increasing your dosage.

Drowsiness and Sedation

You may feel drowsy and tired, especially when you first begin taking methadone. You may also experience a general feeling of weakness. Methadone can also slow reaction time. Drugs.com cautions that you should use care when driving or doing anything that requires alertness while taking this medication. Heroin-Detox.org advises asking your doctor or clinic for a dose reduction if drowsiness continues to be a problem after the first few weeks on methadone.

Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating is a commonly reported side effect of methadone. You may feel you are perspiring heavily, especially on your face, or wake up bathed in perspiration. According to the Schaffer Library of Drug Policy, three-fourths of methadone patients had excessive sweating before beginning methadone maintenance--heroin and other narcotics can also cause excessive sweating--and by the third month, sweating had worsened in 43 percent of them, improved in 30 percent and remained unchanged in the rest.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth, in which your mouth feels dry, parched or cottony, is a common side effect of methadone. Without the protective effects of normal amounts of saliva, you will be more vulnerable to dental problems. Heroin-Detox.org advises chewing sugar-free gum to combat the effects of dry mouth. You should also visit a dentist regularly, avoid sugary food and drinks, and brush and floss frequently.

Constipation

Constipation is another frequent side effect of methadone. Drugs.com notes that constipation often persists even when you are stabilized on the proper dosage. According to Heroin-Detox.org, you can reduce the severity by eating a high-fiber diet, exercising regularly, and drinking plenty of water.
