Whether you purchased your first pair of glasses or your prescription changed, adjusting to the new eyeglasses presents a challenge to some wearers. You might experience eye strain, difficulty seeing or a feeling of dizziness when adapting to new prescription eyeglasses. Easing the adjustment phase begins before you even purchase the glasses, while you are considering the style and adjustment of the frames and lenses. The length of time it takes to adjust to the glasses varies from one person to the next.

Step 1

Ask about the exchange or adjustment policy before purchasing your eyeglasses. Look for a vision center that will replace the lenses if they were made incorrectly as a form of insurance if you cannot adjust to your new glasses.

Step 2

Purchase a pair of glasses without oversized lenses, which skew your vision, according to Drs. Fine, Hoffman & Packer. Choose a pair with lenses large enough for you to see accurately without the extra lens area that can create distortions.

Step 3

Pick up the glasses in person so they can be adjusted by a professional. The alignment of the glasses impacts your vision because it determines which part of the lenses you look through. The adjustment also affects your overall comfort level with the glasses, which figures into the adaptation period.

Step 4

Wear your new prescription eyeglasses in place of your old prescription if you are replacing them. Wearing the glasses is the way your eyes will adjust to looking through them. If you constantly take them off or wear the old prescription, your eyes cannot adjust.

Step 5

Take breaks from your new glasses if you notice headaches or eye strain. Give your head or eyes a chance to recover before putting the glasses back on.

Step 6

Visit the vision center for a readjustment of the glasses if you haven't adjusted after a few days. Give the new adjustment a few days before deciding whether it helps.

Step 7

Call your eye doctor if you cannot get used to the new glasses. You may need to go in for a follow-up appointment to determine whether the prescription was filled correctly.
