One potential drawback to getting hair extensions may not become evident until you attempt to take them out. Hair extensions secured with glue rather than with clips or metal clamps can be especially troublesome. According to MHRW International, gluing involves a process called heat seal bonding that allows your hair extensions to remain in place for approximately four months before it begins to loosen. Patience and care are necessary when removing hair extension glue to make sure you get it all without pulling or causing damage to your natural hair.

Oil Method

Step 1

Apply a generous amount of oil, such as baby, olive, cooking or almond oil, onto the hair extension bond using your fingers.

Step 2

Work the oil into the bond and then leave it on for approximately 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how much glue is in your hair.

Step 3

Comb your hair using gentle pressure to remove the loosened glue. Repeat if necessary.

Conditioner Method

Step 1

Rinse your hair, load it with a thick conditioner and then wrap your head in a clean towel.

Step 2

Soak for approximately 20 minutes to allow the conditioner to penetrate your hair and loosen the glue.

Step 3

Rinse your hair in warm water. If the glue is sufficiently loose, comb through to remove the glue pieces, otherwise repeat as necessary until you can comb the glue from your hair (See Reference 3).

Bond Dissolving Solvent

Step 1

Pour enough bond dissolving solvent onto a cotton ball so that it feels wet.

Step 2

Section off your hair. Working in one section at a time, dab the cotton ball on the glue until it begins to dissolve.

Step 3

Repeat until you have removed all of the glue.

Tips and Warnings

  • No matter which removal method you choose, ensure that no glue residue remains by thoroughly washing your hair.
