"Brahmi" means "that which gives supreme knowledge," and is the main ayurvedic herb for healthy brain function, according to Dr. Vasant Lad and David Frawley, co-authors of "The Yoga of Herbs." Brahmi may also help clear toxins from the blood and kidneys, and support the nervous and immune systems, among other uses. However, there is not conclusive clinical evidence to support any medicinal use of Brahmi. Consult your doctor before taking brahmi or any other herb.

Vata Complications

According to "Ayurveda, Science of Self-Healing," people with a constitution dominated by air and wind have a high level of vata dosha. These individuals tend to be "spacey,"are usually very thin and have quick mental function, though not usually good long-term memory. They may have difficulty sitting still or paying attention for an extended time. Individuals with this type of constitution may find brahmi helpful and calming, but they are also at highest risks to suffer side effects from the herb, especially when the herb is taken in large doses.

According to the "The Yoga of Herbs," brahmi effects the crown chakra, or energy center associated with the crown of the head. If the dosage of brahmi is too large for a particular individual, it may cause a headache. In this case, discontinue the use of brahmi and the headache will subside.


According to "The Yoga of Herbs," brahmi has tranquilizing effects, and in large doses may relax the nervous system so much that it leads to loss of consciousness. To avoid this, take brahmi only in the recommended dosage and always under the supervision of a qualified medical practitioner.
