A daily dip in your swimming pool can spell relief, especially when the temperatures are uncomfortably warm. But all that swimming can make your skin feel tight and dry. Despite what you may think, it is not the chlorine in your pool that causes the dryness. In fact, Dr. Norman Levine M.D. from the University of Arizona explains that it is the water itself which robs your skin of its surface oils. Homemade skin care remedies can help replace the lost moisture.
Step 1
Shower after each swim with warm water and a moisturizing soap or body wash to help replenish moisture to your skin. Blot your skin dry with a soft towel afterward.
Step 2
Pour ¼ cup of coconut oil and ¼ cup of almond oil in a small bowl. Combine the two oils together using a wire whisk. Massage the oil into your skin until absorbed. Repeat daily after each shower.
Step 3
Prepare a baking soda scrub to exfoliate dead skin cells and smooth your skin. Create a paste by adding ½ cup of baking soda to a small bowl.
Step 4
Add just enough water to form a thick paste. Massage the baking soda paste into wet skin using clean fingertips.
Step 5
Rinse the baking soda away with a warm water rinse. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Repeat the process once a week.
Tips and Warnings
- Try applying the coconut and almond oil to your skin before each swim. The oils will help lubricate your skin and protect it from the drying effects of the water.
- When caring for your skin after swimming, don't forget about your hair. Swimming can take a toll on your hair, too. After shampooing, rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar to help restore vitality.
