DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone, is a male hormone that is responsible for most cases of hair loss in both men and women, says the Medical News Today website. This is because it shrinks the hair follicle, preventing essential vitamins and minerals from reaching the hair shaft from your scalp. Fortunately, there are a number of natural ways to block your body's production of DHT.

Saw Palmetto

This herb launches a two-pronged attack against DHT, says Add-Hair.com. First, it blocks the enzyme that combines with testosterone to create DHT and, second, it prevents cells from absorbing DHT. While side effects are rare, some people can experience stomach upset when taking saw palmetto.

Pumpkin Seed Oil

Pumpkin seed oil is reputed to be a natural hair loss remedy that works by helping to breaking down DHT in your liver, says Add-Hair.com. While this oil is rich in essential nutrients, such as zinc and iron, and is undoubtedly good for you, the Supreme Health website suggests more conclusive studies are required to prove pumpkin seed oil is a legitimate DHT blocker.

Soy Isoflavones

Cholesterol can trigger the enzyme that combines with testosterone to produce DHT, says Add-Hair.com. Soy isoflavones work as a DHT blocker by reducing the amount of cholesterol in your bloodstream. And you don't have to consumer soy isoflavones in high doses -- for example, as a supplement -- for them to have an effect, says hairloss-research.org. They are readily found in soy milk and soy protein, such as tofu, and even when eaten in moderate amounts, they have been found to reduce the levels of DHT in your system.
