Many people suffer from dandruff, which is a chronic condition characterized by itchy and flaking skin on your scalp. According to the Mayo Clinic, this is not a medically serious problem, nor is it contagious, but it can be embarrassing and hard to get rid of. While shampooing is an important component of treating dandruff, there are steps you can take in addition to washing your hair. These at-home remedies should be combined with a daily use of an anti-dandruff shampoo to be the most effective.

Step 1

Massage your scalp with essential peppermint oil. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that peppermint oil's soothing properties can relieve chronic skin conditions marked by itching and irritation. It can also get rid of surface bacteria, which may help relieve your dandruff symptoms. Place a few drops of oil on your fingers and gently massage your scalp for five minutes every day. This will also increase blood flow and circulation in your skin, as well as breakup any buildup of dead skin, grease and oil.

Step 2

Use as few styling products as possible, and avoid hair oils altogether. According to the Mayo Clinic, hairsprays and styling gels can get built up on your scalp and make the skin greasier, which may lead to more dandruff and itching. "Essence" notes that oil-based products can also clog the follicles and increase flaking. Apply a moderate amount of the product you choose, and discontinue using anything that you think may be contributing to your dandruff.

Step 3

Get an adequate amount of zinc and vitamin B in your diet. The Mayo Clinic says that these vitamins and minerals may help lessen the severity of dandruff, and supplements can be taken if needed. Talk to your doctor if you feel your diet is lacking these nutrients, and do not take any new supplements before discussing them with a physician.

Step 4

Give your scalp a weekly conditioning treatment to moisturize it and get rid of buildup. Use a conditioner that contains proteins to strengthen your hair and nourish your scalp, says "Allure." Place a quarter-sized amount of conditioner in your palms, and massage the product into your wet scalp and through your hair. Allow it to stay on for 20 minutes, and then rinse it out thoroughly and style your hair as normal.

Tips and Warnings

  • Talk to a dermatologist if your dandruff does not improve after two weeks of home treatment. He may be able to give your prescription products that can help.
