Pheromones are natural chemicals that can alter human emotions and behavior. These chemicals release scents that can attract, repel, frighten or sexually arouse people. The most common types of pheromones are aphrodisiacs. Aphrodisiacs are substances such as drugs, beverages and foods that can increase sexual desire. Pheromone levels vary from person to person, but people who have large amounts in their body tend to attract more people. Consuming foods with pheromones may help increase your libido and spice up your sex life.
Oysters
If you want to increase pheromones in your body, try eating oysters before or during dinner. Oysters are loaded with zinc, a mineral that promotes a healthy reproductive system, boosts testosterone levels and increases your sex drive, according to John M. Hoberman, author of the book "Testosterone Dreams: Rejuvenation, Aphrodisia, Doping." Other foods rich in zinc include wheat germ, low-fat roast beef, veal liver, pumpkin seeds, lamb and peanuts.
Dark Chocolate
Snacking on a few pieces of dark chocolate can increase your pheromone levels. According to Judith Brown, author of the book "Every Woman's Guide to Nutrition," dark chocolate contains a healthy amount of serotonin, a chemical that elevates your mood and increases your sexual desire. Brown further states that dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants that can lower your blood pressure and protect you from infections, viruses and diseases. Other foods that contain serotonin include eggs, bananas, salmon and free range turkey.
Almonds
Noshing on a handful of almonds in-between-meals can elevate your pheromone levels. Almonds are rich in vitamin E, a fat-soluble vitamin that improves sex hormone production and supports a healthy sex drive, according to Jorg Kastner, the author of the book "Chinese Nutrition Therapy: Dietetics in Traditional Chinese Medicine." Other foods that contain vitamin E include sunflower seeds, peanuts, wheat germ oil, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, mangoes and kiwi.
Chili Peppers
Adding chili peppers to your meals can boost pheromone production in your body. According to Lisa Diamond, the author of the book "Sexual Fluidity: Understanding Women's Love and Desire," chili peppers contain a high concentration of capsaicin, a chemical that can produce a warm sensation in your body, increase sensitivity in your genital area and enhance sexual desire. Other hot peppers that can increase sexual desire include cayenne peppers, jalapeno peppers, Thai peppers, Jamaican peppers and habanero peppers.
Granola
Increase your pheromone levels by adding granola to your morning cereal. Granola is loaded with arginine, an amino acid that increases blood flow to your genital area and encourages sexual arousal, according to Judith Brown, author of the book "What to Eat Before-During and After Pregnancy." Other foods that contain arginine include poultry, tuna, salmon, pork, almonds, peanuts, milk, cheese, eggs, walnuts, sunflower seeds, coffee, cereals and soy products.
