Periodontal grafting, also known as gum grafting, is a dental procedure used to cover or protect exposed tooth root surfaces, prevent or treat gum disease or decay, or for cosmetic reasons. To perform the procedure, a dentist or oral surgeon uses a graft of gums from another part of the mouth to repair the affected area. Take steps to help your gums heal and minimize your pain and discomfort after the procedure.
Step 1
Use an ice pack on the affected area for up to 10 minutes at a time, twice per hour for the first six hours after the procedure to help reduce swelling. Use a bag of frozen vegetables if you don't have an ice pack.
Step 2
Take any prescribed antibiotics or pain medication your dentist has prescribed. Follow the specific instructions for dosage and timing to best help your gums heal in a speedy fashion. Take 800 mg of ibuprofen up to three times per day under the direction of your dentist to help reduce pain and swelling.
Step 3
Dissolve 1 tbsp. of salt in 8 oz. of warm water and swish the mixture around in your mouth for one minute at time three to four times per day to help reduce the swelling and prevent infection.
Step 4
Sleep in an inclined position for the first several nights after the procedure. This helps reduce swelling in the affected area. Prop your head up with pillows, or sleep in a recliner.
Step 5
Avoid flossing around the affected area for two weeks following the procedure. Flossing around the area could damage the area or take out any stitches the doctor has put in.
Step 6
Make a follow-up appointment with your dentist to check the progress of your gum graft four to six weeks after the procedure. Schedule one sooner if you experience significant pain or discomfort. Talk to your doctor about any complications you may be having.
