As you are watching the NBA stars, you may notice an elbow, or arm, sleeve on players' shooting arm. This sleeve may be worn as a fashion statement, but it can also be used for various arm injuries. Tendinitis, for example, may occur in the elbow when the tendons become inflamed or irritated over the course of the season. Wearing an elbow sleeve is just one of the many ways to reduce the symptoms of tendinitis while playing basketball.

Injuries

Tendinitis is a common injury sustained by basketball players as a result of constant shooting, passing and dribbling -- repetitive motions that wear on the tendons. As a result, tendinitis can affect shooting and overall performance on the court. Some players choose to wear an elbow sleeve to help reduce the pain and inflammation associated with the injury.

Proper Fit

The main consideration for wearing an elbow sleeve for basketball is proper fit. The elbow sleeve can't restrict any range of motion in the wrist, elbow or shoulder. Most elbow sleeves are designed to fit snugly from the middle of the upper arm to the wrist. A properly fitted elbow sleeve won't slide or move around during the game or restrict blood flow to the arm.

Features

Elbow sleeves are available with a wide range of features based on the individual requirements of the basketball player. For example, some sleeves are contoured to fit your arm more comfortably while other sleeves have additional padding for extra protection. You also can order an elbow sleeve in a specific color to match the color of your uniform. Some elbow sleeves are designed to be adjustable with a hook-and-loop fastener or adjustable pull strap.

Medical Advice

If you experience tendinitis while playing basketball, consult your athletic trainer, strength coach or team doctor immediately. One of these health care professionals may be able to provide an elbow sleeve along with additional treatment options to relieve the tendinitis. If the tendinitis is left untreated for an extended time frame, the tendon may rupture, resulting in surgical repair.
