If you have severely damaged hair, your mane may look dry and frizzy. Damaged hair usually occurs as a result of heat exposure and the overuse of chemicals for processing. Prevent hair damage by covering the hair when exposed to the sun and restricting the use of heat-based styling tools, like curling irons, blow dryers and flat irons. If you do decide to process your hair, wait several months between sessions and follow all aftercare instructions provided by your stylist.
Step 1
Make an appointment for a haircut to remove any split ends and as much of the damaged hair as possible. Go for a regular haircut every four to six weeks to keep the hair healthy.
Step 2
Use a shampoo that is specifically formulated for dry or damaged hair. You should only shampoo every other day to avoid stripping the hair of its natural protective oils. Rinse out the shampoo with lukewarm water. Very hot water can dry out the hair and worsen the damage.
Step 3
Allow the hair to air dry. Avoid brushing or styling the hair until it has air dried completely. Brushing the hair while it is wet can cause breakage to occur.
Step 4
Spray a leave-in conditioner on your entire head of hair before styling. This limits the damage to the hair while brushing or combing. You can use the leave-in conditioner in lieu of a conditioner that is rinsed out while showering.
Step 5
Keep the hair down. Restrictive styles such as braids, buns and ponytails can be damaging to the hair. Limit the use of barrettes and clips while treating damaged hair.
Step 6
Use a deep conditioning treatment on a weekly basis. Choose a protein-based treatment designed to restore severely damaged hair. The conditioner stays in place for several minutes after shampooing before being rinsed out.
