Rashes can occur when skin experiences an allergic reaction, comes in contact with an abrasive irritant or reacts to excessive heat and swelling. Some rashes become extremely itchy as levels of histamine rise in response to the skin irritation. Over-the-counter and prescription medications can help relieve itching and block histamine, but home remedies may work just as well in providing relief and healing.
Step 1
Apply a cool compress to the rash to help eliminate inflammation and soothe itching. With heat rash, such a compress also cools the skin to promote healing. Soak a piece of gauze or a cloth in cool water and apply it to the rash several times a day for at least an hour.
Step 2
Take an oatmeal bath. Add a cupful of oatmeal to a tub full of lukewarm or cool water, or place the oatmeal in a tied washcloth and soak the cloth in the tub. Immerse yourself in the water, making sure that it completely covers the rash.
Step 3
Apply talc to heat rashes after bathing, or oatmeal-based moisturizers to dermatitis rashes. Talc keeps heat rash dry and soothes itching. Oatmeal moisturizers soothe itching and inflammation.
Step 4
Wear cotton clothing that allows the skin to breathe. Covering rashes with nonbreathable material may cause them to worsen and spread, increasing the itching. Cotton is lighter and allows air to reach the skin, minimizing itching and spreading of the rash.
