Olive oil has a wide variety of uses for home remedies, according to the University of California Cooperative Extension in Sonoma County. In addition to health benefits, such as lowering cholesterol, and cosmetic purposes, such as strengthening fingernails, olive oil also can be used to improve the skin by reducing the appearance of scars through its high amounts of vitamins E and K. Scars can appear as a result of moderate or severe acne or injuries, and even though scars typically fade on their own, olive oil can speed the process.
Step 1
Rub 1 tbsp. of olive oil onto your scars. According to the University of California Cooperative Extension in Sonoma County, virgin olive oil works best because of its mix of monosaturated fatty acids and antioxidants. It also has a higher acidity level than the more expensive brands of extra-virgin olive oil. The acidity can help to lighten the scars.
Step 2
Continue rubbing the olive oil on your scars for approximately five minutes. This will loosen the scar tissue.
Step 3
Leave the olive oil on your skin for 10 minutes, then wipe it away with a clean cloth.
Step 4
Mix 1 tsp. of olive oil with 1 tsp. of baking soda. Rub the mixture onto your skin, then rinse. The olive oil and the baking soda exfoliate will scrub away dead skin cells, revealing new and healthier skin underneath.
Tips and Warnings
- Choose a virgin olive oil that is stored in a dark bottle, and store it in a cool place. This will protect the oil from being exposed to light and warmth than can break down the antioxidants and vitamins.
