For children, a fever can be a sign of a serious infection. Any fever above 103 F should be reported to the pediatrician. Fevers can spike suddenly in some children and can be quite scary for parents and children alike.

Lukewarm Bath

Try letting your child soak in a lukewarm tub of water. According to the Mayo Clinic, this remedy works especially well for high temperatures. Allow your child to soak for up to ten minutes at a time. Take a sponge and try to make sure you pour water over his head and all of his body to help with the cooling process. If he begins to shiver, then you should immediately remove him and dry him off.

Cool Down

Remove excess clothing because clothing simply causes heat to get trapped and can actually cause the fever to go even higher. The same is true for excess bedding; make sure you only use a sheet to cover your child because heavy blankets will only keep heat trapped against the body. Get a fan and set it to blow cool air on your child and set the room temperature lower than what you would normally. Also, you can try letting her suck on ice chips to help cool her body and break the fever.

Herbs

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, herbs are generally a safe way to help your child's body treat the fever through its own systems. Try using a green tea supplement to help boost your child's immune system and thus help to reduce the fever. The Bastyr Center for Natural Health reports that green tea contains two immune boosting agents called L-theanine and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Also, brewing an herbal tea made from equal parts of lemon balm leaf, chamomile flower, peppermint leaf, licorice root and elderflower may be very helpful in reducing a fever. However, this tea should only be given to children who are at least two years of age.
