How to Massage One's Own Prostate
Your finger may be too short for a good prostate massage.

The prostate is a soft walnut-shaped gland below the bladder that swells with fluid during sexual arousal. The prostate enlarges with age. Problems such as difficulty urinating or prostate cancer are associated with an enlarged prostate. According to an article in the "Valley Advocate," prostate massage can ease discomfort of an enlarged prostate. Prostate massage might not prevent prostate cancer, but massaging the prostate is linked with overall prostate health.

Clear Your Bowels

Prostate massages require inserting your finger or other objects into your anus. The prostate massage can cause a bowel movement because it can simulate the bowels. You might want to wait until you have a bowel movement before massaging the prostate so that you do not get the urge to have a bowel movement during the massage. Go to the restroom and try defecating to clear your bowels. Wipe clean or even wash up after your bowel movement to reduce foul odors and fecal residue.

Use a Probe

Internal prostate massages require some kind of probe that you can insert approximately 4 or 5 inches into your rectum. You might be able to use your middle finger if you are sufficiently flexible to insert it deep enough. Use probes that have a rounded tip and a smooth surface such as a dildo, drumstick or specialized prostate massage probes. Commercial prostate massagers are shaped to match the form of the inside of your body and might provide the easiest tool for administering a prostate massage to yourself. A commercial prostate massage probe might provide a more thorough massage by including a mechanism or attachment that massages the muscles of the perineum that are on the outside of your prostate. Clean your probe thoroughly with hot water and non-irritant disinfectant. Clip your fingernails and wash your hands if you are using your finger.

Insert and Rub

Unroll a condom on your probe. Unroll the condom over the broad end of the stick if you are using a drumstick or verify the instructions that came with your commercial massager. Apply a generous amount of lubricant to your probe and assume a crawling position with your hands and knees on the ground. Gently insert the probe approximately 4 or 5 inches into your rectum. Apply light pressure toward the gland. This produces an intense sensation that might be mildly pleasurable or cause an erection. Continue applying light pressure while gently pulling the drumstick back about an 2 inches out of your rectum. The intensity drops once you pass the prostate. Release the pressure, gently slide the drumstick back in and repeat five to 10 times. For the last rub, slide the drumstick in, hold pressure on the prostate and count to seven. Jiggle the stick lightly and release the pressure after counting to seven. Slide out and wait 60 seconds, then reinsert the drumstick. Apply pressure to the prostate for seven seconds. Slightly jiggle the stick, release pressure and slide the drumstick out to complete.
