Psoriasis is a disease that causes cells to build up on the skin, creating scales and causing the skin to be dry, itchy, red or irritated. Scalp psoriasis is not a specific condition; it is a part of a psoriasis outbreak that affects different parts of the body. Psoriasis is a chronic illness which means that there isn't a "cure"--symptoms will come and go over time. If you are experiencing an outbreak of psoriasis on your scalp, there are some ways to relieve the symptoms.
Step 1
Use an over-the-counter medicated shampoo containing ketoconazole, coal tar or salicylic acid. Use as directed.
Step 2
Use an ointment, gel or foam containing coal tar or vitamin D (Anthralin or Tazorac). It is best to use these treatments in conjunction with a medicated shampoo. Regular shampoos sometimes contain chemicals or fragrances that can exacerbate symptoms.
Step 3
Apply mineral oil or an oil-based scalp treatment to your scalp at night. Sleep with a shower cap on to increase moisture, soften the scales and reduce inflammation. If possible, wash your hair the morning after.
Step 4
Take an oral medication prescribed your physician or dermatologist. Medications such as a retinoid or methotroxate can slow down the production of skin cells and suppress inflammation. Discuss taking these medications with your doctor to understand potential side effects.
