1. Show Off Your Dance Skills
There are many different dance steps and movements in break dancing. These are categorized into descriptive sections like the basics. The basics are the "top rock" or the movements a breaker does standing upright on the dance floor. The transition movements are the movements that get you from the upside to the downside. Last, but not least, are the "down rock" or the footwork movements that show off your dance style and choreography of the routine.
2. Footwork Shuffles and Variations
Sometimes a footwork step, combination or movement looks like the breaker is just shuffling their feet. Well, surprise, "shuffles" are one of the favorites of break dancing footwork moves. It's a basic shuffling move that has many possibilities for variations. To start, you've just transitioned from your top rock position to the down rock in a squat position. Hold your body weight up by placing your hands on the ground behind you. Shift your body weight to one hand while the opposite knee to foot goes out or a small kick. Switch it to the other hand and foot. Keep shuffling back and forth to the beat of the music; you're doing the break dancing shuffle step. The footwork in the shuffle step can get more creative by adding criss cross movements with the feet as you shuffle them back and forth. Make the movements large and keep the beat of the music.
3. Put Some Grind In Your Break Dancing Footwork
Another impressive break dancing footwork maneuver is the "coffee grinder." Most break dancers have never seen an actual old fashioned coffee grinder work, but they still get the concept of the movement. The movement can be described as being in the squat position on the ground with one leg outstretched. In a circular motion, swing the leg around the front of you in a circle a give "the look of" hopping over the leg with the bent leg. Actually, you are swinging it around and switching the other leg to be stretched out and then circling. Keep rotating back and forth as you get a flow to the movement going. A really good breaker can make this look so easy.
4. Create Your Own Break Dancing Footwork
You can create your own footwork or choreograph your own break dancing footwork. Be original, be creative, use your strengths and avoid steps that you're weak in. There's no right or wrong to the footwork as long as there's rhythm, coordination and there's transition between the movements.
