There are hundreds of different types of yoga, each a derivative of one of the four Hindu yoga paths: Karma, Raja, Bhakti and Jnana. According to yogi author, David Swenson, the most popular form of yoga in the United States is Hatha yoga, a derivative of Raja yoga. Hatha yoga focuses more on the physical aspect of yoga. Three of the most popular types of Hatha yoga include Bikram yoga, Ashtanga yoga and Vinyasa/power yoga.
Bikram Yoga
Bikram yoga is also known as hot yoga. It is usually performed in a room with temperatures between about 95F and 100F. The heat stimulates profuse sweating and makes the body more flexible. It is comprised of about 26 yoga postures and two breathing exercises. These postures are performed twice, making the class about 90-minutes long. Be sure to drink ample water before, during and after the class to stay hydrated. Try not to eat at least two hours prior to avoid nausea. Do not perform Bikram yoga if you are pregnant; consult your doctor before beginning this or any other exercise program.
Ashtanga Yoga
The purpose of Ashtanga yoga is internal cleansing. The yoga, consisting of a series of postures and breathing, stimulates internal heat resulting in sweating which relieves the body of toxins. It is believed to result in improved circulation, weight management and balanced mentality. According to the University of Texas, a study showed that Ashtanga yoga proved to be a beneficial strategy for weight loss for Hispanic children and adolescents.
Vinyasa Yoga
Vinyasa, or power yoga, is similar to Ashtanga yoga. It encompasses the use of popular yoga postures such as the downward dog and the sun salutations. Vinyasa yoga, according to the Nemours Foundations, improves flexibility, strength and stamina and is one of the most popular types of yoga in the United States.
