1. And the Chase is on
The chasse is one of the first basic side to side movements in Jazzercise. The word "chasse" literally means to chase. This is exactly what your feet do during this move. Stand with your feet together, toes and knees facing forward. Step out with your right foot, chase it with the left foot and step immediately back out again with the right foot. This step, together, step movement really gets things going from side to side, so watch out for your neighbor or your living room furniture. Remember this helpful hint: every time you step down, roll through your foot, toe, ball then heel. This will give you the bounce you need to keep up with this high energy step and give you a little cushion in your landing.
2. Add a Cross Over to the Chasse
You can do a more advanced move by adding a cross over step before the standard chasse. The move goes step across the right foot with the left foot, then chasse right, left, right. Use the momentum from the steps and then switch gears to the left. Cross over with the right foot, and then chasse left, right and left again to finish the combination.
3. I Heard Through the Grapevine
The California Raisins made the grapevine step popular decades ago. Jazzercise reinvents the classic grapevine move with traditional foot steps paired with upbeat arm movements. Start in the basic standing position, feet together, arms down at your sides. Step out to the right with your right foot. Take your left foot and cross it behind your right foot and then step down. Take another step out to the right and kick your left foot back, heel toward your bottom. This leaves the left foot ready to step into the opposite direction and keeps the move going from side to side. Alternate the arms with each step, so as you step out with the right foot, make a "V" with your arms over your head. As you cross back with your left foot, flip the "V" down with your hands pointed toward the ground and so on. This step travels and has some powerful arms, so keep some room between you and the person beside you.
4. Cut the Grapevine in Half
Similar to the Grapevine, a Half Step Grapevine doesn't require as much traveling. You'll keep your arms at your sides during this move with your elbows slightly bent. In this lower key move, step out with your right heel, cross back left, step back out with your right heel a second time and bring your feet together. Like other side to side moves, you want to reverse and go to the opposite direction once you've completed the first step.
