Chemically relaxed hair may look silky, smooth and healthy, but the process actually breaks down the structural integrity of your hair, weakening it and making it prone to break. Developing a routine of proper relaxed hair care is important to combat the harsh effects of chemical relaxers, and to keep your hair healthy and strong. Maintaining relaxed hair takes a little extra time and attention, but once you get into the routine, it becomes second nature.

Step 1

Wait three to seven days after receiving a relaxing treatment before washing your hair. Ask your hairdresser what the recommended waiting time is for the brand of relaxer used on your hair.

Step 2

Apply a reconstructor the first three to four times you wash your hair after a relaxer is applied. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo and then apply the reconstructor to your scalp. Massage it into your hair and let it sit according to the time recommended on the label.

Step 3

Wash your hair no more than one to two times a week with a very mild shampoo. Apply the shampoo to your scalp and let the shower spray rinse the shampoo through to the ends. Apply a moisturizing conditioner to all of your hair and let it sit for five to 10 minutes before rinsing.

Step 4

Wrap a turban or absorbent towel around your head when you get out of the shower. Do not rub your hair or wring it out; just let the material soak the water out of it.

Step 5

Comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb to remove any tangles. Do not use a hairbrush of any kind on wet hair, as this can cause breakage. Using a wide-toothed comb on dry hair is also better for it than using a brush.

Step 6

Air dry your hair, lifting your roots with your fingers every few minutes, and smoothing the ends with your fingers.

Step 7

Apply a warm oil treatment once a week. Pour almond or olive oil into a small bowl and warm it slightly in the microwave. Do not let it get hot, just slightly warmer than room temperature. Massage the oil into your hair, wrap your head in a turban or towel and let the oil soak in overnight.

Tips and Warnings

  • Invest in a satin pillowcase if you can't sleep with your head wrapped. The lack of friction when you move at night will help avoid breakage.
  • Do not get your hair relaxed more than once every eight to 10 weeks. Frequent relaxing can cause permanent damage.
