Men who compete in swimming and triathlon competitions shave their body hair in order to enable themselves to swim, bicycle and run more quickly during competition. Time is measured in fractions of a second in these competitions, which could mean the difference between winning and second place. Shaving also helps the athlete in the event of a bad spill off a bicycle--the shaved athlete finds it easier to keep his wound clean.

Trim Leg Hair with Clippers

Buy two hair clippers. The first clippers should be the smaller clippers with a smaller clipping surface to take off hair in the tight areas, such as behind your knees and around your ankles. The second hair clippers should be the standard clippers used for hair cuts at home.
Spread out a towel, sit in a straight chair and start clipping the long leg hair off, onto the towel. Clip your leg hair only up to your swimsuit line.

Shaving Tools

Buy men's body wash or a sensitive skin shaving gel, a set of men's razors with refills and lotion. Make sure your bathroom is well-lit so you can see exactly what you are doing. The Coach Levi website recommends that you bring a plastic bowl, like a leftover container so you can splash water over your legs to wet and rinse them.
The first time you shave your legs, you may go through more than one razor because of the amount of hair you have on your legs. Be prepared to replace a dulled shaving blade.
You can choose to use either shave gel or a men's body wash. The main purpose is to make it easier for your razors to move on your skin, removing your leg hair. Lotion helps prevent skin irritation and ingrown leg hairs, according to the Tri-Newbies website.

Shaving Your Legs the First Time

You'll need shave gel or bath gel and a new men's razor. Bring a plastic bowl into the bathroom with you; use this to splash water over your legs before you begin shaving.
Fill the tub with warm water and sit on the side of the tub. Squeeze out a large amount of shaving or bath gel and smooth this onto one lower leg, from the ankle to the knee. Wet your razor and carefully start shaving your leg against the direction of the hair growth, rinsing the razor frequently. Be careful when shaving the top of your shin and your ankles so you don't cut your skin. Work all the way around your leg, then rinse your leg. Spread gel on your knee and shave there. Wet your thigh up to your swimming suit line and smooth gel onto your thigh all the way around. Shave carefully, then rinse the remaining gel off. Repeat for your other leg. Rinse your legs, dry them and apply lotion to reduce the irritation.
