Shiseido Pureness is a line of skin-care products designed to clarify, tone and moisturize skin while reducing sebum over-production, a condition that can lead to acne. The Shsiedo Pureness skin-care line consists of five skin-care products designed to be used in conjunction with one another. The line also contains makeup products and a makeup remover.

Detergents

Shiseido Pureness Deep Cleansing Foam contains stearic acid, a detergent and emulsifier. It also contains myristic acid, potassium hydroxide, lauric acid, sodium lauryl glycol carboxylate and sodium methyl cocoyl taurate. These ingredients are not found in the other Shseido Pureness products, which focus on moisturizing skin and controlling oil production.

Moisturizers

Water is found in every product of the Shiseido Pureness line. It immediately adds moisture to the skin and improves the texture of the products. Glycerin is common among all the products also. It's a hygroscopic moisturizer that draws moisture from the air to your skin, as stated by "A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients." Xylitol, a plant-derived moisturizer, is found in Shiseido Pureness Mattifying Oil-Free Moisturizer, Moisturizing Gel-Cream and Balancing Softener Alcohol-Free. Pentaerythrityl Tetraoctanoate is a moisturizing ingredient found in Pureness Mattifying Oil-Free Moisturizer and Pureness Moisturizing Gel-Cream. These two products also use silicone-based moisturizers. The oil-free formula contains cylcomethicone, while the gel-cream contains dimethicone and dimethicone copolyol,. Polyethylene gycol-derived ingredients are found in the cleanser and the oil-free moisturizer. The cleanser contains PEG-8 and the moisturizer contains PEG-6. The cleanser also contains beeswax, not found in any other Pureness product. Shiseido Pureness Moisturizing Gel-Cream contains three moisturizing ingredients not found in the other Pureness products: hydrogenated C6-14 olefin polymers and corn starch. The balancing softener contains dipropylene glycol and the Pureness Oil-Control Blotting Paper contains erythritol.

Emulsifiers

Emulsifiers keep oil-based and water-based ingredients from separating. The Pureness gel-cream moisturizer and cleanser both contain Glyceryl Stearate SE, an emulsifier, according to "Milady's Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary." The oil-free moisturizer and the gel-cream moisturizer both contain xanthan gum, a naturally-derived emulsifier and emollient. In addition to these ingredients, the oil-free moisturizer contains PEG-32, a polyethylene-derived emulsifier. The gel-cream contains potassium carbomer and sucrose stearate, an emulsifier with skin-conditioning properties. Shseido Pureness Deep Cleansing Foam contains two additional emulsifiers: poloaxamer 184 and polyethylene. Purenesss Balancing Softener contains PPG-13 decyltetradeceth-24. The Pureness blotting paper contains polysorbate 80, which according to "Cosmetics Unmasked" is both an emulsifier and solvent. The blotting paper also contains dihydrocholeth-30 and hydrogenated lecithin.

Preservatives

Preservatives keep the product from decaying. They extend the shelf life of the product. Shiseido Pureness Deep Cleansing Foam uses Trisodium EDTA and Disodium EDTA as preservatives. The oil-free moisturizer, gel-cream moisturizer and blotting paper also contain trisodium EDTA. With the exclusion of the deep cleansing foam and the blotting paper, all Shisiedo products list benzoic acid as a preservative. Methylparaben, a preservative with anti-fungal, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties according to "Cosmetics Unmasked," is listed among the ingredients of the Pureness oil-free moisturizer, balancing softener, blotting paper and moisturizing gel-cream. Phenoxyethanol is a preservative listed in Pureness's balancing softener and oil-free moisturizer. The oil-free moisturizer also contains the preservative carbomer. Pureness's Deep Cleansing Foam makes use of sorbitol, a chemical that prevents the product from drying out. It also includes magnesium aluminum silicate among its ingredients, a chemical that keeps the product from caking and adds opacity. The blotting paper lists sodium dehydroacetate as one of its preservatives. Shiseido's Pureness gel-cream moisturizer and balancing softener list chelating agents among their ingredients. Chelating agents prevent the buildup of metal particles by binding with them. The gel-cream contains sodium hexametaphosphate, also found in the softener. The softener includes sodium citrate and citric acid as additional chelating agents.

Extracts and Preservatives

There is one extract common across the entire line of Shiseido Pureness products: rosemary extract. Rosemary extract is purported to have toning and clarifying properties, according to "The Herbal Companion." The second most common extract, excluded only from the blotting paper, is peony root extract, which is thought to have skin-conditioning properties, as outlined in "The Herbal Companion." Eysenhardtia polystachya, or palo azul, wood is another extract present in the oil-free and gel-cream moisturizers, as well as the balancing softener. Palo azul wood extract is a natural moisturizer. The deep foaming cleanser contains menthol, a substance derived from mint which causes a pleasant tingling feeling. The cleanser also contains talc, a natural moisture absorber. The oil-free moisturizer contains silica, an ingredient derived from sand that acts as an exfoliant. The Pureness oil-free moisturizer also contains potassium hydroxide tocopherol, a form of the skin-regenerating vitamin E. The balancing softener product contains Saxifraga sarmentosa, or strawberry begonia, extract. This extract is purportedly an astringent and cleanser. The blotting paper lists kaolin, a natural oil-controlling clay and cellulose gum, a plant-derived product, among its ingredients. Cellulose gum makes up the bulk of the blotting paper, according to "A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients."

Other Ingredients

Butylene gylcol is a solvent and opacifier, according to "Milady's Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary." It is found in all products in the Shiseido Pureness Line. All products in the line also contain a non-specific listing for fragrance. Both moisturizers contain SD alcohol 40-B, an astringent. Calcium chloride, another astringent, is found in the oil-free moisturizer, the gel-cream moisturizer and the balancing softener. Shiseido Pureness Deep Foaming Cleanser contains ethylcellulose, a chemical that forms a film over the skin to protect it from environmental hazards. The cleanser also contains benzoic acid, a chemical that is meant to adjust the pH level of the product to keep it from harming the skin. Potassium-acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer is a film-forming agent found in the oil-free and gel-cream moisturizers. The balancing softener, oil-free and gel-cream moisturizers also contain magnesium chloride, a chemical meant to increase the viscosity of the products. The oil-free moisturizer contains PEG-60 Glyceryl Isostearate, a surfactant that allows the product to glide onto the skin. The balancing softener contains dimorpholinopyridazinone, a mild sunscreen. The softener also contains FD&C dyes yellow number 5 and green number 3. The deep foaming cleanser and blotting paper contain zinc oxides and ultramarines as coloring agents. The cleanser and moisturizing gel-cream use iron oxides as pigments.
