Exfoliation is the process of removing dead and dry skin cells from the surface of your skin. While the claimed benefits of exfoliation have not been scientifically proven, exfoliation with sugar scrubs may help reduce the buildup of dead skin cells, unclog pores and reduce the appearance of dark marks from acne for smoother and younger looking skin. You can make your own facial sugar scrub with a few basic ingredients. While the first scrub is gentle enough for all skin types, the spices in the second recipe may cause irritation on skin with acne or sunburn.
Gentle Facial Sugar Scrub
Step 1
Remove the leaves and finely chop one medium sized fresh tomato. Place the tomato in a food processor and puree for 15 to 30 seconds.
Step 2
Combine the pureed tomato with 1/4 to 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 2 tbsp. yogurt in a bowl. Start with 1/4 cup and continue adding sugar as you mix until the scrub reaches the desired consistency. The more sugar you add, the thicker and grainier your scrub will be.
Step 3
Thoroughly clean and dry your face. Gently massage the sugar scrub onto your skin with the tips of your fingers. Apply in small, circular movements.
Step 4
Leave the scrub on your face for 10 minutes. Rinse away the mixture with warm water and pat your face dry with a clean towel.
Spicy Brown Sugar Scrub
Step 1
Place 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup granulated white sugar in a clean, dry bowl. Add the almond oil, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger to the sugar and whisk the mixture together to remove any lumps.
Step 2
Add the cardamom oil a drop at a time, stirring it into the mixture as you go.
Step 3
Rinse your skin and apply the mixture to your skin with your fingers using a circular motion. Rinse skin thoroughly, and dry off with a clean towel.
Tips and Warnings
- Store any remaining scrub in an airtight container. Add spices and essential oils to the scrub recipes to find a combination you enjoy.
- Test the scrub on a small portion of your skin first, and immediately stop using the scrub if you notice a skin reaction.
