Synthroid is drug that is also known as its generic name levothyroxine. It is usually prescribed for people with hypothyroidism, a condition in which their thyroid does not produce enough hormone, causing lethargy, weight gain and increased sensitivity to cold. Doctors usually prescribe a low dose of synthroid and then gradually increase it.

Mechanism

Synthroid works to replace thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone works to increase the body's metabolism and causes cells to burn more energy. However, excessively high levels of thyroid hormone, which can be caused by a synthroid overdose, can lead to dangerous side effects.

Cardiovascular Symptoms

One of the most common side effects of a synthroid overdose is the over-activation of the heart. As a result, blood pressure increases, and the heart rate speeds up. In extreme cases, heart palpitations can also be experienced.

Other Symptoms

Synthroid overdoses can also cause certain mental symptoms, such as anxiety and insomnia. This works because the thyroid hormone also stimulates the brain, similarly to adrenaline. This stimulation can cause anxiety, leading to insomnia. Elevated thyroid hormone levels can also increase the body's temperature, leading to a fever

Serious Side Effects

Some symptoms of a synthroid overdose can be life threatening. The early signs of a serious overdose include confusion and disorientation. Other symptoms can include seizures, a stroke and a coma. A synthroid overdose can be fatal.

Risks

Certain factors can increase the risk of a synthroid overdose. For example, because of synthroid's ability to cause weight loss, people with healthy thyroids might take it. The use of synthroid in this manner greatly increases the risk of an overdose, especially when synthroid is used along with amphetamines or other stimulants. People taking synthroid should let their doctor know if they begin taking any new medications, including herbal supplements.
