Whether you are one of the millions of Americans who suffer from rosacea, a chronic skin condition that causes reddening of the facial skin and an acne-like rash, or you have sensitive skin that turns red with the slightest irritation, a red skin tone can be frustrating and disheartening. Depending on the severity of your condition, seeing a doctor or dermatologist might be the first, and most important, step. For less severe cases, you may find good results with self-treatment.

Step 1

Use only mild, hypoallergenic products, including cleanser, lotion and makeup, on your face. Hypoallergenic means it is less likely to contain ingredients known to cause allergies, which may lead to redness and irritation.

Step 2

Try a product like Eucerin Redness Relief with licorice extract licochalcone A, which studies have shown reduces facial redness due to rosacea and sensitive skin.

Step 3

Make a mask with 1/4-cup aloe juice and 1/4-cup cucumber, pureed in a blender, and apply it to your face daily. Cucumber and aloe both have calming, soothing, redness-reducing properties.

Step 4

Use a color-correcting makeup with a green or yellow base to counter the redness in your skin.

Step 5

Avoid eating spicy foods or drinking alcohol, both of which can cause the skin to flush and appear more red.

Step 6

Stay out of the sun, and always wear sunscreen.
