A tummy tuck is a common procedure in which excessive fat and skin in your abdomen are surgically removed. Once the operation is performed, your post-operative care begins. This includes working to prevent blood clots and properly treating the affected area. Tummy tucks are effective treatments, and within weeks you should achieve your desired results.

Definition

Tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a procedure done to remove excess fat and skin from the abdomen. In addition, it improves a patient's profile by restoring weakened or separated muscles. The result is a smoother and firmer abdomen. The surgery is commonly done on women who have given birth or patients who have lost a considerable amount of weight. The conditions usually result in extra skin and fat, which patients may want to get rid of.

Procedure

During a tummy tuck, your surgeon will make an incision starting at one side of your hipbone and moving along your abdomen to the other side of your hipbone. The excess fat and skin are then surgically removed. If you have loose skin above your navel, another incision may be made higher on your abdomen. In order to tighten the abdominal wall, your surgeon will connect your muscles and tissue with sutures. Once the excess skin is removed, the remaining skin is pulled down and attached to the skin near the pubic area with sutures.

Post-Operation

Following the operation, you will have to get out of bed occasionally for short walks. This will promote circulation and prevent blood clots. You will most likely have swelling and bruising in the area. It will take weeks and possibly months for this to completely subside. Surgical drains and stitches will be removed over the course of the following week or two. You may also need to wear a support garment over your abdomen for several weeks.

Recovery Time

Recovery time for a tummy tuck varies greatly. Depending on factors such as the extent of the operation and your physical condition, you can expect to resume normal activities within one to three weeks, as long as they are non-strenuous. Mild exercise can usually be performed after a few weeks. During these initial weeks following the operation, you may experience some pain, which should subside over time. The incisions should fade but may remain visible.

Prognosis

A tummy tuck is an effective treatment. Your abdomen will remain firm and flat for many years. However, in time, age and gravity will have an effect. A second procedure can be done later if you desire. If you become pregnant or gain a considerable amount of weight, the effects of the operation will be undone.
