The NuvaRing is a vaginal ring that that releases estrogen and progestin into the blood stream to prevent pregnancy. One of the reported common side effects while on the NuvaRing is weight gain, according to NuvaRing.com. Managing unexpected weight can be frustrating, but there is hope. Before you dive into the newest crash diet to quickly lose pounds gained while on the ring, take a look at your lifestyle. A few modifications to your eating and exercise regime will help you shed excess weight.

Step 1

Clean out your kitchen. Toss out any processed foods that contain large amounts of saturated fats, refined sugars and sodium which can sabotage your weight loss efforts, notes MayoClinc.com. Throw out deli-meats, potato chips, frozen dinners, pre-seasoned pasta or rice and sugary cereals that have little nutritional value and can encourage overeating and cause weight gain.

Step 2

Consume a diet filled with unprocessed natural foods like fresh produce, lean meats, eggs, fish, legumes, soybeans, whole grain bread and pasta, fiber-rich cereal, brown rice and low fat dairy like cottage cheese. Eating natural foods helps to keep you feeling fuller by eating less food to aid in weight loss.

Step 3

Eat often. Consume five to six smaller meals per day instead of the traditional large three square meals. Eating frequently increases your metabolism because your body burns calories as your food digests. Fuel up every three to four hours to prevent hunger and stay satiated throughout the day. Keep a cooler with your meals ready so you aren't caught without food and tempted to grab an unhealthy option.

Step 4

Write down your meals daily to count calories and track eating trends. Watch your average calorie intake and subtract 500 to 750 to lose one to two pounds per week.

Step 5

Perform total body circuit training workouts four times per week to burn fat and build muscle in the same workout. Work each muscle group with one weighted exercise like squats, lunges, chest press, bicep curls and tricep dips. Include 30 to 60 second of cardiovascular activity, like jumping jacks, after every exercise. Rotate through the circuit for 30 to 45 minutes. Expect to burn 500 to 600 calories during each workout.

Tips and Warnings

  • Drink at least eight cups of water per day to stay hydrated and minimize extra weight due to water retention, notes MayoClinic.com.
