Yoga is a physical and mental discipline that seeks to achieve balance by connecting the body, breath and mind. A typical yoga routine combines physical postures, called asanas, with breathing techniques and meditative practices. Although yoga has its origins in Asian religions, contemporary yoga groups teach a relatively secular version of the ancient practice. Typical goals include stress reduction and physical fitness.
Stress Reduction
Yoga decreases stress. Although researchers are not certain of the reasons, but the mental and physical relaxation techniques that yoga develops seem to decrease a practitioner's stress responses, according to the Harvard Medical School. The school says yoga reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, eases respiration and improves mood. Harvard cites research that indicates yoga breathing techniques may help mitigate depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Flexibility and Balance
Yoga develops your flexibility and balance. Yoga postures, or asanas, typically incorporate a variety of muscle groups. Simpler poses develop your ability to stretch and bend. As your skill level and physical fitness improve, your ability to perform more difficult maneuvers increases. Difficult poses often require advanced physical fitness and agility, as well as concentration, so it's important to develop your skills under the tutelage of an experienced teacher.
Support
Both beginner and advanced yoga practitioners benefit from having a support group. Your fellow classmates will encourage you to complete difficult exercises, coach you when you need to correct your form and provide advice when you encounter problems. If you enjoy being around the people in your group, you will be more likely to show up for meetings, and your skill level will increase quickly.
Expert Advice
A yoga group leader typically has extensive experience and the ability to teach others how to achieve difficult positions. With the right teacher, you'll progress at a quicker pace than if you attempt to teach yourself. If possible, research different yoga classes before joining. Ask group members what they think of the teacher and whether they recommend joining the class. You not only will gain information about prospective yoga groups, but also may make some friends, which will help you acclimate to the group environment.
