Skin can become inflamed and red from many factors, including allergies, sun damage or as a side effect from skin-care products. When the skin is red, it can cause your face to appear irritated and swollen. Fortunately, there are a few ways to diminish redness in the face that will sooth and calm your skin. These treatments involve applying a few substances, such as aloe vera and oatmeal, which can be used on your skin to decrease redness.
Step 1
Apply a skin-soothing oatmeal and honey mask. In a small bowl, combine 2 tbsp. of honey with 1 tbsp. of raw, ground oats. Mix the two substances together well, and spread them onto your skin. Cover the entire area that is affected by redness and irritation. Leave the oatmeal and honey mask on your skin for at least 15 minutes. Wipe off the mask into a trash can, then rinse your skin well with warm water. An oatmeal and honey mask can be applied to your skin once a day to relieve inflammation and reduces redness in your skin.
Step 2
Apply an anti-inflammatory aloe vera gel mask. Although aloe vera gel is most commonly used to treat burns and abrasions, it is also very helpful in reducing inflammation and redness in the skin. You can purchase aloe vera gel at any grocery or health food store. Spread 2 tbsp. of aloe vera gel directly onto your skin, spreading it evenly over the entire area effected by redness. Leave the aloe vera on for at least 15 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Apply an aloe vera mask once a day to decrease redness on your skin.
Step 3
Apply ice to your skin to reduce swelling and inflammation. Ice shrinks the capillaries and reduces swelling in the skin, which diminishes the appearance of redness as a result. It is important when applying ice to your skin to wrap the ice in a thin towel to prevent it from causing pain or numbness. Wrap one or two ice cubes in a thin towel, then gently rub the ice over the area of your skin effected by redness. Use slow, circular motions. After five minutes, pat your skin dry gently with a soft towel. Ice can be applied to the skin once a day to reduce swelling and redness.
