I'm A.J. Tucker, and I'm going to show you how to get a bigger core. A lot of us think that if we do a bunch of crunches or weighted crunches we can get a bigger and more powerful core but actually my top two exercises are the deadlift and the squat, power lifting style. The deadlift and the squat they both engage the core in a major way. On the deadlift I want my hands about shoulder width apart. I want my feet narrow, my toes pointing straight ahead. Whenever I do the deadlift, I'm going to push my butt back until I get to my knees. I'm going to keep my body the same angle. Once I go below the knees with the bar, that's when I start to bend the knees until I touch the floor, then I come back up the same way and whenever you do this exercise you really engage the core. Use your glutes, your back, your hamstrings, but you also use your core as a major stabilizing muscle. I'm going to make sure my hands are a little bit wider than shoulder width apart on the squat. I'm going to go in, feet shoulder width apart, toes slightly pointed out, I'm going to lower my body all the way down until my butt is below my knees and then come all the way up. Now people typically think of this as a leg exercise but I'm also engaging my core and I'm pushing the weight up with my core and my quads.
