Hello, I'm Dr. Donald Ozello of Championship Chiropractic for LIVESTRONG.com. I'm going to be discussing exercises that you can do to avoid low back pain. The exercise ball is a great tool for strengthening the lumbar spine. It is a very simple way to strengthen the lumbar spine and to avoid pain in that area. One of the first things that you want to do when you are sitting on the ball is be in a correct position, sit up nice and straight, pull the shoulder blades back. You can let your arms hang down or you can put your arms on your hips. The next thing that you want to do is flex the abdominal muscles so that you pull your hips into what is called the pelvic tilt position. From that position you will be working the abdominal muscles and the lower back muscles. Hold that position, bounce very slightly on the ball. You do not want to make or lose contact with the ball but you want to slide to your left very simply and then slide to your right. You don't want to go too far. It's a very simple bouncing exercise and you hold that pelvic tilt throughout the exercise. Then you come forward, go to the right, go backwards to the left again and then forward so that you are making a rectangular motion and then do the opposite. You will be targeting all of the muscles in the lower abdominal area and all of the muscles in the low back. This simple exercise helps to strengthen the low back and the core and not put any pressure on the lumbar spine. So it's going to help you avoid lumbar spine pain.
