Hello, I'm Dr. Donald Ozello of Championship Chiropractic for LIVESTRONG.com. Today, I'm going to be speaking about the benefits of sleeping on your back. There are numerous benefits to sleeping on your back. When you are on your back a greater surface area of your body makes contact with the bed. That spreads out to forces and lessens the amount of pressure that's put on the body. Another benefit is that the spine is in a straight position as compared to when you are laying on your side or when you are laying on your stomach. When you are on your back the spine is straight. Also when you are laying on your back the neck is in line with the spine, it is in a neutral position. A greater surface area makes contact with the mattress when you are laying on your back. When you are in supine position your entire back, the back of your head, and the posterior aspect of the hips make contact with the mattress. If you lay down with your legs straight then also the back of your legs and your heels will make contact with the mattress. Also your spine is straight. When your spine is straight it alleviates any bending, any pressure that could be put on the spine from bending or twisting of the spine. Another benefit of laying on your back is that your neck is in a neutral position. When you are laying on your side or when you are laying on your stomach your neck has to be bent or turned. When you are laying on your back your neck is in perfect alignment with your spine.
