Hi, I'm Juliet Kaska, and these are the benefits to doing a shoulder stand. A shoulder stand is a move from yoga and according to Yoga Journal, there are many benefits to doing it including decreasing your level of stress, improving your sleep at night, increasing the thyroid glands and also in toning the core, the thigh sand the glutes. So in order to do a shoulder stand, take your yoga mat or a blanket and roll it up until it's about a quarter of an inch off of the ground and then lie down so your shoulders are placed on the mat and your feet are firmly placed on the ground and your head is just off of the mat. Place your arms down by your side and then draw your knees in towards your chest and then extend the legs up towards the ceiling. Inhale and on the exhale, scoop the abs in and roll the legs back and over your head. Point the toes and try to extend longer. There's actually a stretch to the lower back and out through the hamstrings, squeeze the hamstrings and push the thighs up towards the ceiling, reaching your toes all the way up. You can place the hand to the small of your back to give yourself some support, holding here. If you are a beginner, just stay here for about 10 to 15 seconds. A more advanced yogi will build their practice and hold this for many minutes, sometimes up to five. When you come down, slowly roll your spine down, one vertebra at a time until your tailbone comes back down to the ground.
