I'm Jackie Arnett, registered dietician and this is can yogurt and oatmeal can be combined together to create a healthy lunch. If you like yogurt and you like oatmeal, then it's a no-brainer they can be combined to create a delicious lunch. But it also could be a very healthy lunch. And it starts first with portion size. For yogurt you want to get about one cup of yogurt, which provides eight grams of protein and about 140 calories. Preferably organic. For oatmeal, you want to try and get regular steel cut and this you want to get about a half cup serving size. It doesn't look like a lot but when you cook it and absorbs the water it equals one cup serving size and this is just right and it provides 150 calories. The next thing you want to look at is sugar. You want to avoid the flavor brands and all those sugary type of flavors. For example the yogurt you want to get plain and that in itself has sugar because of the lactose. For the oatmeal too you want to avoid the flavored items and all the different types they have. Just get the plain oatmeal. And then you can flavor it later the way you like. To make the yogurt oatmeal you have to cook the oatmeal and then let it go to room temperature. You can't add the yogurt to a heated oatmeal because then the yogurt can start to coagulate. So you want to make sure both are very cool. All you need to do is add the yogurt to the oatmeal and then you can have some fun with the topping. You could add walnuts and blueberries which are my picks. But you could add strawberries, cinnamon, so many different types out there. And then you could add honey or stevia and flavor it to your liking. Not sweetened any more than you need to. And then the yogurt and oatmeal can be a healthy lunch as well as delicious.
