Hi, I'm Marty Beene, and I'm here to talk about running with a backpack to get in shape. A lot of people want to try this because they think by adding the extra weight to themselves it will help get them in shape faster. Please, don't do this. You'll get in shape by patiently completing your workouts and by adding miles and minutes to your routine on a day to day and a week to week basis. You might theoretically get in better shape by wearing a backpack because of the extra effort involved in carrying the extra weight but unfortunately you might end up getting injured. Why is that? When you are running you are literally flying through the air with every step and every time you land you are imparting a force to your body. When you have the extra weight from a backpack, that force is going to be greater than your body is expecting. However, with that said, new runners may actually benefit from wearing a backpack while walking. This works because when you walk you are not flying through the air like you are when you are running so wearing a backpack while you are trying to get in shape to start running is probably a good idea.
