Hey, everybody. This is Chef Mareya, the Fit Foodie. Today, I want to talk to you about healthy amounts of carbohydrates. Now when I say the word carb, I don't want it to strike fear in your heart, because carbohydrates are essential to our metabolism and I mean essential. It's all a matter of getting good quality carbohydrates and the right amount. So as a rule of thumb, I recommend about 40% of your total caloric intake to come from good quality carbohydrates and that can be fiber based just like what you see here. It can come from beans. Carbohydrates also exist in vegetables. So just make sure that you are looking at the label if you are buying a packaged carbohydrate. Now for example the crackers that you see here are one serving size. It's not the whole bag, it's not half the box. So between 19 and 25 grams of carbohydrates on average per serving of crackers. Now when it comes to breads and pastas, you really want to look at the label. The average tortilla contains about 20 to 25 carbohydrates per tortilla. You can find low carb tortillas like these that are about half the amount so that's a great place to save on your carbs. Also pasta, a serving of pasta can be anywhere from 40 to 45 grams of carbs per serving, not that you can't have them but just make sure that you are keeping that in check in proportion to your total carb intake for the day. Lastly when you are buying those snacks in the single serving size, make sure to reach how many servings you are actually getting in that bag or box. You might be surprised to see what you think is one serving is actually two or three. So as a rule of thumb about 40% of your total caloric intake from carbohydrates per day, that averages out to about 225 to 350 grams of carbohydrates just depending on your size and total calories and enjoy good quality carbohydrates, they are your friend.
