Hi, I'm Kara Miller, the Lifestylista, and today I'm gonna talk to you about healthy things to eat and drink if you've got a stage three kidney problem. CKD, or chronic kidney disease effects one in 10 Americans, and if you have high blood pressure or diabetes, you're much more likely to get CKD. If you get a stage three CKD diagnosis, what that means is your kidney's filtration rate is, there's damage there, but it's not severe, yet. If you get that diagnosis, first thing you wanna do, obviously go to your doctor and you take medication, and you make lifestyle changes, including healthy things to eat and drink. First thing, you and your doctor are gonna work very closely on establishing what your reduced potassium intake should be. Secondly, salt, excess salt, as you see, in say, high processed food, really can damage your kidneys and that's not a good thing. Also, if you think, "oh, I'll be clever, I'll use a salt alternative," that will contain potassium chloride, and that will also damage your kidneys. Protein, your doctor may have you on a reduced protein diet so you may very well not be eating so much of the fish, the meat, the dairy, the legumes, and so, in certain vegetables, and so on. Now, it's interesting because phosphorous is also damaging to your kidneys at this stage. So, you don't wanna be drinking beer, you don't wanna be drinking dark sodas, don't wanna be having those legumes, and actually, you wanna be eating more calcium in order to counteract the effects of the phosphorous. So, we're talking milk, yogurt, et cetera. Remember, go to your doctor, or your registered dietitian, to get specific advice that's tailored to you.
