Hello my name is Dr. Julia Tatum Hunter from Holistic Dermatology and we're here to talk about the evidence proving the efficacy of digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes basically are what allow you to break down the food so it can be absorbed and used by your body. So why wouldn't your body make enough digestive enzymes? Well first of all just like your hormones go down as you go down the path of life, so does everything else in your body including your pancreas and the entire body's production of digestive enzymes. So if you eat your food and you don't have enough digestive enzymes then you are not going to absorb it so it just passes through and in fact, it can inflame you and your gut and become an aging thing instead of a positive thing. So what enzymes really matter? Well first of all, in the saliva there is amylase that starts breaking down sugars and carbohydrates. You should avoid a lot of carbohydrates but overall you still need amylase and your saliva production goes down as you go down the path of life. Also, in your stomach, the most important digestive enzyme overall in your entire body is hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid, if you don't have enough then number one it is there to kill the bacteria, viruses and fungus that you eat in every morsel of food you eat because your food is certainly not sterile and then second of all it's there to very essentially start the digestion process. So if you lack hydrochloric acid digestive enzymes, then your food becomes an irritant, it starts inflaming your gut. The other thing is your pancreas, your pancreas is just another organ but what does it do? It's the great producer of digestive enzymes and so that's lactase, some people lack that and those are the people who are lactose intolerant. There's proteases that start breaking down proteins. There's all the digestive enzymes and so if you don't produce enough then you can't digest your food. So it's very important as you go down the path of life to take digestive enzymes simply because you don't produce enough. If you are stressed, you don't produce enough. If you eat on the run, you don't produce enough. So that's why you take digestive enzymes to facilitate, to ameliorate so that the good food that you eat, because you can be eating organic fresh picked right out of the garden, but if you lack hydrochloric acid and all the other digestive enzymes, you are not absorbing your food and in fact, all the good food is becoming an irritant. The other thing is metabolic enzymes. Those are the enzymes that help break down the scar tissue that we accumulate over the path of life. So number one is the proof is in the pudding. How do you feel? Do you not get gas, bloating, constipation?
