Hi I'm Stella Metsovas. And today we're going to address a pretty serious subject matter. And that is foods that replicate estrogen. Although both men and women produce estrogen, estrogen is the primary female sex hormone produced in the ovaries. And is composed of estrone, estradiol, estrial. Now why should you be careful with foods that contain estrogen? According to the Linus Pauling Institute breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women of developed countries. As many as one in eight North American women can expect to develop breast cancer during their lifetime. Many experts believe that breast cancer results from exposure of exogenous hormones that could possibly alter a healthy estrogen metabolism. Men also need to be very careful because the delicate balance required for healthy testosterone and estrogen mainly from xenoestrogens disrupt a healthy cycle. Okay so what foods replicate estrogen? First you want to make sure to stay clear of a high carbohydrate diet. Especially from refined foods like white rice, bread, pasta, and soy containing foods. The excess calories are stored in the body as fat predisposing you to higher estrogen levels by increasing insulin levels and really messing with your leptin levels. Leptin is actually the fat storing hormone. Quick fact, alcohol can really disrupt estrogen balance because of sugars that increase insulin that could trigger estrogen dominance. Second being mindful of animal based proteins and fats. More specifically the feed given to the animals because the actual food given could contain high amounts of estrogen. These animals are often fed high estrogenic foods like soy. If the dairy cattle are fed estrogen increasing foods and pharmaceuticals you also want to make sure that you stay away from whey protein powders. Third stay far, far, far away from plastic water bottles. The plastic contains xenoestrogens that artificially stimulate estrogen. And finally most foods contain estrogens. Some more then others. The key is to keep your hormones healthy by keeping insulin levels in check. You do this by keeping your diet in balance 90 percent of the time by eating the true Mediterranean diet of our ancestral past.
