TODD DAGENAIS: In this segment, I want to talk to you on how to be a setter. If the middle blocker is the most physical person on the floor, I don't think there's any doubt that the setter is probably the most cerebral person on the floor. The setter is your field general .They are the one that's controlling all of the action. The setter has to be in charge of making sure that your serve receive is lined correctly so that there's no holes in your serve receive. They have to make sure that they're getting the ball in the appropriate hitter's hands. They're going to do this in a couple of different ways. First of all, a good setter takes a look at the defense while they're sitting in serve receive and they're trying to figure out, "How can I best exploit this block?" "Hey, there's a short blocker out here" or "Hey, there's a slow blocker out here." Let's find a way to get the ball onto the hitter where they can get over or around that blocker. That's the very first thing that they're trying to do. Secondly, a setter is going to take a look at who their hot hitter is. You know what? Sometimes it doesn't matter how many blockers are on a hot hitter, for some reason that hot hitter finds a way to score. Lastly, when that team is struggling, a setter is going to find a way just to make sure that things don't fall apart. Sometimes it means taking responsibility for a set that really was a perfect set, the hitter just missed. But a good setter says, "You know what? That's my fault. I'll make that ball better." A setter goes out there and they're a jack of all trades. They make sure that they are getting the ball on the hot hitter's hands. They are making sure that they're finding a way to exploit the defense. They are making sure that your offensive and defensive alignment is correct, and sometimes they're the ones that are going to go up to the referee and stick out for you when the referee makes a bad call against you. It's the setter that's going to be up there sticking out for you, so take good care of your setter because that's a hard job. And those of you that want to be setters out there I applaud you because to me that's one of the most admirable positions in the sport of volleyball.
