The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAI) reports that 27 percent of children with allergies have eczema, an irritating skin condition. Up to 24 percent of people in the United States will have acute hives at some point in their lives. When it comes to putting creams and lotions on the skin, it is important to be aware of the ingredients. If not cared for properly, an innocent skin rash can easily become infected and linger for weeks.
Fragrance Free
When choosing a skin cream that will not cause irritation, consider avoiding products with added fragrances. The oils used to make moisturizers that smell like flowers or fruit can cause an allergic reaction or dry skin. Products like Cetaphil and Lubriderm are fragrance free and specifically formulated for sensitive skin that is prone to reacting to irritants.
Aloe Vera
Aloe is a gel from the pulp of the aloe vera plant. It is used to treat burns, infections and wounds, according to the Mayo Clinic. St. Ives makes a moisturizer infused with aloe vera, as do chain stores with their own brands, like Walgreens. Just be sure to choose a product that is fragrance free.
Hydrocortisone
For people who suffer from skin conditions that cause pain, redness, swelling and itching, topical hydrocortisone can help ease discomfort, according to the National Institutes of Health. Hydrocortisone is available with and without a prescription.
Chamomile
The Mayo Clinic reports that topical ointments containing chamomile is nearly as effective as hydrocortisone creams. Hydrocortisone is often used for treating dermatitis. Gold Bond and Nature's Gate have lotions containing chamomile extract.
Non-Steroidal Cream
A non-steroidal ointment, such as Atopiclair, contains no medications, but it still relieves symptoms associated with sensitive skin. Atopic dermatitis, for instance, is a form of eczema. It can affect between 10 and 20 percent of children and 1 to 3 percent of American adults, according to the AAAI. For a condition that causes persistent inflammation, extreme itchiness and swelling, even the gentlest cream can be irritating. A non-steroidal ointment is used to reduce irritation and will not sting skin. Atopiclair can only be obtained by prescription.
