According to the Mayo Clinic, sunburn is characterized by red, painful skin that feels hot to the touch. Sunburn will occur after a few hours from time spent outdoors. Sunburn on your face, which is always exposed, can occur any time of the year, even on cloudy days. It can take from a few days to several weeks for sunburn to heal, and frequent burns can increase the risk for developing wrinkles and skin cancer. One-third of adults surveyed by the American Cancer Society report having had sunburn in the past.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are over-the-counter medications that relieve pain, swelling and inflammation. Aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are some common NSAIDs available at pharmacies.
The Mayo Clinic reports that these medications work best when taken as soon as symptoms appear. Acetaminophen, including Tylenol, can help ease pain, but it won't relieve inflammation.
Corticosteroids
Corticosteroids can heal mild sunburn quicker than NSAIDs. They also help minimize swelling and reduce pain. Corticosteroids will not be helpful if they are not prescribed within 48 hours after the sunburn occurs. For acute sunburn, corticosteroids have been proven ineffectual.
Cool Skin
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend placing a cool, wet washcloth on your face for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day. Mixing baking soda with the water may help relieve pain.
The University of Iowa suggests using a compress with witch hazel, a soothing astringent, or an antihistamine like Benadryl for relieving itching associated with sunburn. Aloe can help soothe skin because it contains compounds that ease pain and inflammation.
For sunburn that yields blisters, reports the Mayo Clinic, be sure to keep them intact. Breaking blisters can slow healing and also increases the risk for infection.
Moisturizer
After a few days, skin will begin to peel, especially on the nose. This is the body's way of shedding damaged skin and dead cells. Using a moisturizer will keep skin hydrated and ease itching. For the face, it's best to use a non-oily, water-based lotion.
