Lithium is a naturally occurring element that can be used to treat depression and mood swings, as stated by the National Alliance of Mental Health. High doses exceeding 400mg of lithium have been used as an ingredient in prescription drugs, such as Eskalith or Lithobid, to treat bipolar disorder. But doses of elemental lithium in the form of lithium orotate are healthy for the brain, according to Dr. Jonathan Wright of the Tahoma Clinic in Washington. The form of lithium used in prescription drugs is usually lithium carbonate.

Grows Brain Cells

Lithium orotate may generate new brain cells. A study conducted at Wayne State University in Michigan showed that individuals who took lithium for four weeks had a 3 percent increase in gray matter in the brain.

Forty million Americans suffer from severe headaches, states the New York University Pain Management Center. Migraines are a vascular headache, meaning they involve constriction and dilation of the blood vessels in the head. Lithium orotate can be used to treat migraine headaches, according to the Nutrition Review.
