How to Get Rid of Discoloration Around the Eyes

No one likes to get discoloration or bags underneath their eyes. The dark circles under your eyes can be caused by crying, dehydration, allergies or sleep deprivation. However, you are much more likely to get bags under your eyes as you age. When you get older, the skin around your eyes gets thinner, and its elasticity breaks down. This causes your blood vessels to show through your skin. Although you can go to a cosmetic surgeon and pay thousands of dollars to get rid of the discoloration around your eyes, there are things you can do at home to reduce the condition. The key to fix the discoloration is to get your rest, cut out drinking and smoking and change the way you eat.

Step 1

Drink lots of water. If your body is dehydrated, it will try to hold onto as much water as possible, making your eyes puffy and discolored. The more water you drink, the healthier your skin will be. Avoid drinks loaded with caffeine, alcohol and sugar. All three ingredients will make the discoloration around your eyes worse.

Step 2

Use teabags on your eyes. Brew two teabags, drain and cool. Lie down, and place the teabags over your eyes. Take a short nap or leave the teabags on for at least 20 minutes.

Step 3

Sleep more. If you are sleep deprived, you strip your skin cells of the opportunity to recover from the abuse you put it through every day. Sleep allows you the rest you need to heal the skin around your eyes. If you are tired, you have a much higher chance of getting discoloration around your eyes. The National Sleep Foundation says your should get seven to eight hours of sleep every night. If you are not able to get that much sleep, try to take a nap during the day. A 15-minute nap with your feet elevated higher than your head will help refresh your body and reduce the discoloration around your eyes.

Step 4

Use an ice pack on your eyes. Buy a gel ice pack, and wrap a towel over it. Lie flat on your back, and put the ice pack over your eyes for about 20 minutes. The cold temperature will reduce the swelling and discoloration around your eyes. Although the ice pack is effective, the discoloration reduction is only temporary. Repeat this procedure several times a day to continue the effects.

Step 5

Quit smoking. Smoking causes blood vessel issues that make them more prominent underneath your eyes and changes the surrounding tissue to a bluish color.
