The hands are the most common area of the body to develop tremors or uncontrollable shaking. Tremors can happen when resting, holding the hand in a fixed position or when moving about in general. Tremors that occur in the absence of disease are called essential tremors. Tremors can also occur due to neurological conditions such as Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy or be caused by stroke. There are various remedies for hand tremors that can be used along with any treatment program for the underlying condition.

Dietary Changes

Avoiding certain foods or substances that increase the activity of the nervous system may help to control tremors. The National Institutes of Health recommends cutting back on foods and drinks with caffeine or alcohol. It may be helpful to keep a diary of the foods that are eaten and the frequency and intensity of tremors. This diary may help to point out trouble foods.

Stress Management Techniques

Stress and strong emotions can contribute to some types of hand tremors, which means it may be helpful to learn how to keep stress levels low, states MayoClinic.com. There are many forms of meditation or relaxation a person can try. This can involve sitting quietly and taking slow, deep breaths while keeping the attention on the breath and away from worrisome thoughts. Guided imagery, which involves imagining being in a peaceful place or visualizing the hand relaxing, can also help. Along with managing stress, it is important to get a good night's sleep since fatigue can make tremors worse.

Medications

It is important to discuss any medications being taken with a physician. There are medications that can cause hand tremors as a side effect. Switching medications or lowering the current dosage may help to control tremors. However, the University of Maryland Medical Center states there are other medications that help to calm the nervous system, which may also reduce the incidence of hand tremors. Propranolol and primidone are two possible medications to try.

Hold the Hand or Hold an Object

According to the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre, when a tremor begins, it may be helpful to apply pressure to the area. This can be done by holding the hand close to the body with the other hand or arm. Stabilizing the hand against a table or the arm of the chair may also help. With some types of tremors, picking up a weighted object may stop the tremor: however, in some patients, this makes the tremor worse. It may be necessary to try several remedies to find the ones that work best.
