Overview

Blemishes are generally caused by hormonal changes or environmental factors like exposure to pet hair, dust or changes in weather or humidity. However, there are numerous natural ways you get rid of blemishes, whether you only have occasional breakouts or are generally blemish-prone. Though some have claimed success with these remedies, they have not been evaluated by the FDA for effectiveness.

Lemon Juice and Lemon Peel

The application of lemon juice and lemon peel to the skin is a common technique used to get rid of blemishes in Ayurvedic beauty care, according to Melanie A. Sachs, author of “Ayurvedic Beauty Care.” To use lemon juice on the skin, dilute three tablespoons of freshly-squeezed or natural lemon juice with one tablespoon of distilled water in a measuring cup or bowl. With a brush, apply a thin layer to the affected area and leave it on for up to 60 minutes before rinsing the skin with cool water. To use lemon peel, quarter a lemon and remove the peel from one section. Gently rub the pithy, white side on the skin for 60 seconds. There is no need to rinse the skin after the lemon peel application.

Orange Peel and Almond Scrub

Orange peel and almond scrub is a frequently used home remedy for oily, blemish-prone skin, according to Lisa Sharon Belkin, author of “The Cosmetics Cookbook.” To make an orange peel and almond scrub, put one-eighth cup orange peel and one-eighth cup whole almonds in a blender or food processor and chop until the mixture has the consistency of sand. Wet the skin with cool water, and gently scrub the mixture onto the skin for 30 seconds over the sink or in the bathtub or shower. Rinse the skin with cool, clean water to remove any excess orange peel and almond scrub.

Honey and Turmeric

Honey and turmeric are common Ayurvedic beauty remedies to reduce the presence of blemishes, according to Melanie A. Sachs, author of “Ayurvedic Beauty Care.” To use honey and turmeric, mix one tablespoon honey and one teaspoon powdered turmeric in a small bowl. With a brush or clean fingertips, apply a thin layer to the affected area. Leave the mixture on for 25 to 30 minutes before rinsing the skin with cool water. Wash the area with a gentle cleanser after applying the honey and turmeric, and pat the skin dry.

Lemon and Cucumber

A combination of lemon juice and cucumber is a commonly used folk remedy for getting rid of blemishes, while helping to reduce redness and visibility in the process. To use lemon and cucumber, put three tablespoons natural or freshly-squeezed lemon juice in a blender and add one half-cup fresh, peeled cucumber. Blend for 30 seconds until completely combined. Apply the mixture to the affected area with a clean brush or fingertips and leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse the skin with cool water and apply a moisturizer after rinsing.
