The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that the biological pollutants people encounter each day are harmful to both health and skin. Harsh chemicals in cosmetics and beauty items can irritate the skin and promote unsightly blemishes and breakouts. Individuals with sensitive skin can have allergic reactions to the myriad of chemical compounds. Basic yet effective home remedies for cleaning the pores require little more than common household ingredients.

Deep within the skin, new cells constantly generate to replenish dead cells on the skin’s surface. These outer layers contain the natural skin-protecting protein keratin, which often accumulates to make the skin appear unhealthy and lackluster. Without the proper exfoliation, the pores clog, leading to acne and blackheads. To make an almond scrub, finely ground 1 tbsp. of almonds in a blender or food processor, then mix with 1 tbsp. of honey and 1 egg white. Apply to the face in circular motions to lift away dead skin cells. Wipe the scrub away with a warm cloth.

Facial masks help to remove debris and impurities from deep within the pores. Common store masks contain harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin and cause breakouts. For a quick and less-expensive pore refining facial mask, combine 1 egg, 1/2 cup of coconut oil and 1 tbsp. of honey in a small dish. Beat the ingredients together until it has a firm consistency, and freeze overnight in an ice-cube tray. Apply one cube to the face by smoothing it over the skin. Let the mask dry for approximately 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Skin toners are a crucial component of your daily skin regimen. They help to clarify the pores, remove impurities and restore the skin’s natural pH balance. Many commercial toners are mostly alcohol, which is extremely drying to the skin. For a gentle clarifying toner, combine 1/2 cup of chopped fresh mint with 2 tbsp. crushed chamomile flowers in 4 cups of water. Boil the ingredients in a shallow saucepan, and strain the liquid into a jar. Refrigerate the solution for up to two weeks, applying daily with a cotton ball. Chamomile and mint both soothe skin while keeping it moisturized.

Facial Steaming

Facial steaming helps to unclog the pores by sweating out impurities. This process is most effective when done prior to a cleansing scrub. Daily Glow suggests boiling a pot of water with 15 drops of essential oil; tea tree oil, for example, helps to fight acne and is antibacterial. Place the pot on a table, and drape a towel around your head and the pot to trap the steam for 5 minutes. Rinse your skin with warm water to wash away impurities.

Using the natural acid from lemons, you can effectively and safely get rid of dead surface skin and expose healthy, younger cells. Chemical peels are detrimental to the skin and can cause premature aging and irritation. For a simple in-home peel, combine fresh lemon juice with 2 tbsp. of tumeric powder. Apply lightly over the face or directly on dark spots, and let stand for 5 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
