If you have stamina, you have the ability to sustain prolonged physical or mental effort. Often associated with sport, stamina can be applied equally to all areas of life. A physically or mentally demanding job requires just as much stamina as a challenging sporting activity. So in terms of stamina, how long is a prolonged effort?

In sport, long distance running or cycling events such as the Marathon Des Sables or the Tour De France are considered to be the ultimate test of stamina. These are events that take weeks to complete, yet a 400-meter track race completed in under one minute can be described as a sprint race that requires stamina. An athlete with stamina has staying power and an ability to finish strongly in the event.

The process of developing stamina is termed endurance training. Developing stamina in sport requires sport-specific training to meet the specific requirements of each activity. For example, a marathon runner requires a high level of cardiorespiratory endurance, but a rower requires muscular endurance, as well as cardiorespiratory fitness to cope with the resistance created by the water. Stamina is developed by progressively overloading the body to increase endurance levels as it adapts to the demands being placed on it.

If you have a physically demanding job, it requires stamina to remain alert and efficient for the duration of your working day. The simple fact that your body is subjected to the same demands every working day stimulates an adaptive response that increases your endurance. Mental stamina is the ability to concentrate. In both sport and in life, the ability to maintain concentration and to avoid mental fatigue can have a direct effect on your ability to do physical tasks to the best of your ability.
A Theory
Research carried out by scientists at the University of Exeter in Great Britain has found that drinking beetroot juice can boost stamina. In a controlled study using exercise bikes, researchers concluded that drinking the beetroot juice produced a 16 percent increase in exercise endurance. Professor Andy Jones says, "We were amazed by the effects of beetroot juice on oxygen uptake, because these effects cannot be achieved by any other known means, including training. I am sure professional and amateur athletes will be interested in the results."
